Chrissie Wellington Leaves TeamTBB

Chrissie Wellington crossing the line to win her 2nd Ironman World Championships in Kona Hawaii 2008Wellington will be joined by TeamTBB teammates Belinda Granger of Australia and American Hillary Biscay to work under English. "They say it is new challenges and opportunities that have fueled their departure but those who know the Team know there has been a lot of pressure on them to go with the Team Sponsors rather than individual sponsors" says KP. "I have trained with the team members on a number of occasions and even had discussions with the team owner about group sponsorship and I know the sport of Triathlon while developing has very few companies that can financially meet the possible demands of Team sponsorship. When you are at the top of your game, no matter what sport it is you need to get out there and make the most of it while it lasts. This is exactly how I see this move and we applaud them for it”. Says KP

“I view Chrissie leaving Brett Sutton as more of a move toward a more hands on, financially secure future rather than what she has been used to.  I have spoken with Brett on a number of occasions about Chrissie and he has the highest respect for her ability, even at one stage saying to me "she has done it a year earlier than I expected" when he spoke about her first World Ironman Championship win.  I am sure Brett will miss her but he will keep producing more and more champions, that's the kind of guy he is.

Let's face it, there aren't many Triathletes making money from this sport, I mean real money, compared to other sports. Those at the top need to be getting what they deserve. The sport of Triathlon is grueling enough, especially in the Ironman Pro category. The sacrifices these athletes make is, to most people, inhuman” Says KP

“Interestingly, Cliff English is also coach (and husband), to Samantha McGlone, 2006 Ironman 70.3 World Champion, runner-up in Hawaii last year, and arguably Chrissie's closest challenger on the Ironman circuit. He has also worked with the likes of Peter Reid, Leanda Cave, Melanie McQuaid and Sarah Haskins”. Says Tri247

Everyone at the Shanghai Tri Club wish all three women the very best for their move. HP
